Welcome to Griffith English Language Institute (GELI)

For more than 30 years, Griffith University’s official English language provider, GELI, has helped thousands of international students develop their English skills for successful tertiary study.

From October 2026, GELI programs are proudly delivered by Navitas English on behalf of Griffith University. As one of Australia’s most established and respected English language providers, Navitas English brings decades of expertise in English language education and student support.

Griffith College students can receive one packaged offer for their study at GELI, Griffith College and Griffith University.

ACADEMIC ENGLISH YOUR DIRECT ENTRY PATHWAY

Academic English provides a direct entry pathway to Griffith College and Griffith University degree programs. If you’re planning to study at Griffith University or Griffith College, GELI’s Academic English program can help you develop the English language and academic skills needed for higher education study.

Designed specifically for university preparation, the program builds your academic literacy, critical thinking, research, writing and communication skills. You’ll gain the confidence to participate in lectures, tutorials, presentations, group projects and academic discussions.

Successful completion of Academic English meets the English language proficiency requirements for eligible Griffith University degree programs, Study Abroad and Exchange programs, and Griffith College courses. This means you can progress to your chosen program without sitting an external English language test such as IELTS or PTE, provided all other entry requirements are met.

WHO IS NAVITAS ENGLISH?

Navitas English Services Pty Ltd, trading as Navitas English – Griffith English Language Institute, is an ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) provider with over 40 years’ experience in the industry. You can read more about Navitas English here.

WHAT IS THE COURSE DURATION?

Students will be placed into an Academic English program based on their current English level and the entry requirements of their intended Griffith College program.

There are four levels: Academic English 1, 2, 3 and 4. The duration for each of these levels is 10 weeks per course level.

WHAT IS THE MODE OF STUDY?

Study is face-to-face on either our Brisbane City or Gold Coast campus. Students should expect around 20 hours of study per week, plus 5 hours’ of study electives.

WHAT IF I WANT TO STUDY GENERAL ENGLISH?

Academic English courses prepare students for further study and provide pathways to Griffith College and Griffith University.

General English courses are delivered across different English proficiency levels (like DEP1-6) and focus on developing practical English skills for everyday situations. Students who are interested in General English can visit Navitas English for more information.

WHEN DO CLASSES START?

In 2027, classes commence on campus at Brisbane City and the Gold Coast:

4th January; 8th February; 15th March; 19th April; 24th May; 28th June; 2nd August; 6th September; 11th October; 15th November.
